Story Time: Reading

(Sorry this is extremely late, I've been very busy with some family/friend situations. But I'm back now!)

I've decided to start something new at story time. Each week, we'll be tackling a letter of the alphabet until we conquer the entire alphabet! Although each story time may not be specifically focused on the letter, the letter of the week will feature in at least one of the stories read, and we'll learn how to write each letter. Each week, the story time friend gets to take a work sheet home with them, and if they fill it out completely and bring it back, they get to go in prize box. As a kick-off, I did a story time focused on reading and how fun it can be.

How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills
ISBN: 9780375858994

This book is so sweet and fun, I love it! Rocket is your average play-all-day puppy, nut when the yellow bird starts up a class, Rocket becomes a student. Over the course of a year, Rocket learns to spell and read. The kids at story time really seemed to pay attention to this one, and it was a hit. They liked making the whoosh-ing sound of the wind and repeating or guessing some of the words that were spelled. The pictures are simple and adorable, and I really liked the bright colors that were used in this book. I'll definitely use this book again some time in the future; it's just too precious!

Read and Rise by Sandra Pinkney; Illustrated by Myles Pinkey
ISBN: 9780439309295

This book highlights how reading can take you to new places and show you new things to be. I liked this one, but the poetry was a little bit clunky and didn't flow very well on the page. However, the photos were really cool and the kids liked them; I also think the kids liked calling out which one of the professions they would like to be. It's a good length for reading to smaller kids, and it is a good look at poetry for younger kids.

No T. Rex in the Library by Toni Buzzeo; Illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa
ISBN: 9781416939276

Tess is creating an uproar in the library, so her mom sits her in time out. But when she knocks over a cart of books, an even bigger uproar emerges from one of the books: a T. Rex! Tess gets to ride the T. Rex through a number of scenes where they encounter other story book characters and inhabitants, like knights, cowboys and pirates. But Tess finds out that a T. Rex doesn't really belong in the library when books begin to riiip and tear! This book was awesome for story time at the library. It's fun and gives an intro to library rules without being over-bearing and pedantic. The story shows kids that behaving like a T. Rex isn't appropriate in the library and that library books should be handled with care. As a librarian, I loooove this book.

During the story time, we sang the mighty, glorious Alphabet Song. I was happy to hear that most of them already knew it! For a craft, we made decorated books out of construction paper and white paper. I pre-made the little books since most of the kids in my storytime are very young, and they were able to decorate the outside or inside (or both) with stickers and coloring.
